Panama has a service-based economy and a strong reputation as a regional business and logistics hub. The Residence by Investment Program provides a structured path for international investors to obtain residency while making a qualifying investment in the country. Depending on the route selected, applicants may receive residency in as little as ~30 days or within 4–6 months, with a longer-term pathway that can include eligibility to apply for citizenship after meeting residency requirements.
Panama offers several residency-by-investment options for individuals and families who want a legal pathway to live in Panama and build long-term ties to the country. Depending on the route, applicants may qualify for fast-tracked permanent residence or temporary residence leading to permanent residence.
1) Qualified Investor (Fast-Track Permanent Residence)
Choose one of the following investments:
USD 300,000 in Panamanian real estate
USD 500,000 in approved securities (through a licensed intermediary)
USD 750,000 in a fixed-term bank deposit in Panama
Investments generally must be maintained for five years to preserve permanent residence status.
2) Friendly Nations (Temporary → Permanent Residence)
Available to citizens of eligible “Friendly Nations” who establish an economic tie to Panama, typically through:
USD 200,000 real estate, or
USD 200,000 fixed-term bank deposit, or
Employment with a Panama-based company (where applicable)
This route usually starts with a two-year residence permit, with the option to apply for permanent residence afterward.
3) Reforestation / Forestry Investor (Temporary or Permanent, depending on amount)
Invest through an approved, registered reforestation project:
USD 100,000 typically grants temporary residence, with eligibility to apply for permanent residence after two years
USD 350,000 typically qualifies for immediate permanent residence
Residency can typically be extended to a spouse and dependents, including dependent children (and, in many cases, dependent parents), subject to documentation requirements.
Applications generally include due diligence, proof of funds, and investment documentation (varies by route). Processing times depend on the category and government review, but Qualified Investor is commonly the fastest, while other routes often take longer.
